His musical language is full of influences from his Scottish heritage, Catholic faith, social conscience and close connection with Celtic folk music, with other influences coming from the Far East, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Works like The Confession of Isobel Gowdie, Veni, Veni Emmanuel and Seven Last Words from the Cross have been performed throughout the world and acclaimed for their accessibility and depth of expression. He talks to Katy Hamilton about his life and work as the festival welcomes him to Ryedale as Composer in Residence.
